I ran across this giant, slightly electric version of a pink cherry blossom tree a few nights ago, just outside the Fuji TV headquarters in Odaiba. A pretty stunning sight and it seems the tree serves to promote a few tv shows, with a twist. Apparently people download an app, shake their phones and the more they do it, the more the tree lights up. Clever. And engaging too – when I was there people were shaking their phones like crazy, and snapping pics, excited as ever.
Way back in the summer of 2009 I boarded the (awesome) automatic Yurikamome train, heading over the Rainbow Bridge and on to Odaiba, the man-made island in Tokyo Bay. I had a meeting with Mr Gundam. Or rather, Mobile Suit Gundam. The giant anime character had been erected, life size, in a park right on the waterfront and I absolutely wanted to say hi.
The RX-78 Gundam statue was only meant to be temporary and after having gone through a number of relocations and an earthquake, it finally got a more permanent home not too far from it's original location – right outside the new Diver City mall in Odaiba. I went there around christmas and It's a pretty amazing sight. Light and music kicks in every 30 minutes or so with Gundam doing it's thing while the crowds go "ahhhhhh!" in unison at the sight of smoke pouring out of the engines. Awesome stuff, really.
Gundam back in 2009:
Get yourself to Shimabshi and jump on the Yurikamome, riding along until you get to the Daiba station (U-07). From there it's a short walk across the Metropolitan Expressway to the Diver City mall with Gundam waiting for you on the other side of the building.
